On February 23, Greater Birmingham Ministries, Faith in Action Alabama, and the Alabama League of Women Voters will be sponsoring a voting rights restoration lobby day in support of legislation to reform Alabama’s restrictive and undemocratic felon disenfranchisement law. Join us outside the Alabama State Capitol in Montgomery to let our legislators know that you support voting rights for all Alabamians. Introduced by Representative Laura Hall, the bill (HB53/SB6) would eliminate the application requirement for formerly incarcerated people and require the Board of Pardons and Parole to automatically reinstate voting rights for those who have completed their sentence. The bill would also allow an indigent individual to have his or her voting rights restored even if they have not paid all of their fines, fees and court costs associated with the disqualifying conviction if he or she is in compliance with an approved payment plan.
