Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM) recently notified the Alabama Secretary of State’s (SOS) office that the SOS is in violation of the National Voter Registration Act (“NVRA”) for refusing to provide GBM with a list of voter applicants and registered voters who have been deemed ineligible because of a disqualifying felony conviction. The SOS’s continued failure to provide these public records constitutes a violation of the NVRA, 52 U.S.C. § 20507(i)(1), within 120 days of a federal election, 52 U.S.C. § 20510(b), and GBM expects to file a lawsuit in the near future to secure this list. GBM is seeking the list of disenfranchised Alabamians so it can begin reaching out to those on the list and provide voter registration and voter restoration assistance.
